Stylebhais turn arty!

Bollywood hunk Sanjay Dutt and filmmaker Sanjay Gupta launch a production house to make art films.
Stylebhais turn arty!
Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta and his production house with Sanjay Dutt are synonymous with maar-dhaad kind of uberchic slick flicks. But, now, Gupta and Dutt are all set to tread the arty way! The duo have set up a branch of their production house called White Feather Arthouse Films that will make and promote parallel cinema, reveals an insider. When contacted, both Gupta and Dutt confirmed it.

Says Gupta, "That's true. There are a lot of stories waiting to be told, but which may not be viable in the commercial format. So, we wanted to make and promote different kinds of film which do not follow commercial pattern. We want to make path-breaking films that will cater to a niche audience looking for intelligent cinema and we're also looking at the international film festival circuit." But couldn't they have made the same films under their orignal banner? "We could have, but it tends to mislead people. The audience would come in expecting a big budget dhamaka, but would not see one. We are very clear about the audience here," he explains. A far cry from their larger than life star-studded extravaganzas, these films will be smaller in nature. "Launching White Feather Arthouse Films is not really a deviation, but an extension to the kind of films we're making. Even at the peak of his superstardom Dad made films such as Mujhe Jeene Do, Reshma Aur Shera and Yaadein which defied the conventional formula films. And that is exactly what we intend to do with our Arthouse Division," says Dutt. He adds, "Also since the budgets are smaller and the risks minimised it gives us the opportunity to introduce more fresh talent into the business." Talking about the films that are already in production under this banner, Gupta informs that their first film is already under way. Titled The Great Indian Butterfly, the film is in English and will star Sandhya Mridul, Koel Purie and Aamir Bashir and will be directed by Sarthak Dasgupta. Then there's another untitled film which will be directed by Anand Rai. "We are also currently in talks with other directors including Govind Nihalani and Shyam Benegal," he adds.
